Sniper, or sniper shooter, is an infantryman who is specially trained to have the ability to kill enemies remotely from a distance using a rifle.

This term emerged in the 1770s, to British Colonial soldiers in India, from the word snipe, a kind of bird that is very difficult to approach and get shot. Those who are skilled in chasing this bird are given the nickname "sniper".
