Trochanteric bursitis is inflammation of the fluid-filled bursa sac that surrounds the top part of the femur bone, called the greater trochanter. The trochanteric bursa helps connective tissue smoothly glide over a joint at the outer point of the hip,which is why it's also commonly called hip bursitis when it flares up. Trochanteric bursitis is a common cause of hip pain, making it difficult to walk, run and be active. Coping with the symptoms of bursitis revolves around home care and medical treatments.
