Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible 1.14

Matthew Poole (1624 - 1679) was a Nonconformist theologian from England. He was born at York and educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He was awarded a BA and then a MA at Oxford. Poole was a jure divino presbyterian, and an authorized defender of the views on ordination of the London provincial assembly. As a preacher he was perhaps only rivaled by Matthew Henry. Poole's insightful commentary continues to be a trusted resource for preachers and laypeople. He offers a verse-by-verse exposition and summaries for each chapter and book, questions and answers, information on cultural context, historical impact, and cross-references. Practical, readable, and applicable.

Though Poole occasionally preached and printed some articles, Poole made no attempt to have a congregation. He lived off a meager £100 a year.

Poole is famous for his English Annotations on the Holy Bible, a work which was completed by several of his Nonconformist brethren, and published in 2 volumes in 1683. The work was continued by others a finished in 1840. This work has chapter outlines which are among the best available.
